I made a cake for you and me
to eat our fill just after tea,
mixed sugar, eggs and milk and flour
and baked it well for half an hour,
I tipped it out upon a tray
and let it cool for half a day,
beat sugar up with butter fat
and added loads of chocolate,
then piled it on and heaped it up
and stuck a candle on the top,
then called you in when it was done
to serenade you with a song,
and watched you blow the candle hard
and open up your birthday card,
and then we cut it into two
and ate our cake, just me and you!
I wrote this for my friend and prolific fellow writer Duncan Swallow, to celebrate his first Blog Birthday! Well worth checking out his site: http://nobodysreadingme.wordpress.com/
Julia, I am genuinely touched by this. Thank you so much. I’m filling up here.
Told you I was going off to do something. Took a while to get all the ingredients together 🙂 Happy Birthday.
So that’s what you were doing. That is so cool! Thank you.
😀
How lovely! It is beautiful!! Lucky man, that Duncan Swallow, to have a friend such as you. 🙂
Thank you, Heather. I think friendship is the best gift, by far.
Yes. Friendship truly is a wonderful gift!!
But…but…there was no jam on it! How can you have any cake, if there’s no jam on it?
PS: double points if you get the allusion…
Ha ha, we must have crossed over in the ether and visited each other’s poetry at exactly the same moment. Whoosh!
Um, usually there is no jam because I already ate it 🙂
I can believe that, Julia. BTW see my post this coming Sunday. I know it’s usually maid’s day off, but I’ve made an exception for this week.
For definite.
😀
Yum. Good cake, good friends. Cheers all the way round!
Cheers!
A great gift for him 🙂
Mind you , you could have posted it 😉
Well I did – sort of 🙂
Haha very good 🙂
That is really cute.
Thank you. I enjoyed baking it 🙂
